Homemade Astrigents
Astringents are usually drying and may include water, alcohol, propylene glycol, witch hazel, or salicylic acid. These may cause itching, burning, or tingling in people with dry, sensitive, or irritated skin. An astringent helps to stop bleeding and reduce the body secretions as they cause blood vessels and tissues to covenant. They also convince coagulation of blood proteins. The properties of astringents are same as toners.
Astringents are perfect for maintaining and preventing future acne breakouts and if you already have a pimple-free face, then astringents are counseled for maintenance. They are primarily composed of chemical substances which allow body tissue to mummify.
Astringents when applied to the skin can effectively prevent it from harmful substances that can worsen or generate acne but as astringents have the tendency to dry skin, it is essential to use appropriate moisturizers after each application. Astringents may be indicated in a wide range of problems but especially in wound healing and conditions of the digestive system.
Mildly astringent solutions are used in the relaxation of such minor skin irritations as those consequenting from superficial cuts, allergies, insect bites, or fungal infections such as athlete's foot. Shave lotions, cologne and cleansing creams are made from astringents only. Expel rich fried foods and load up on green vegetables instead. Astringent medicines cause shrinkage of mucous membranes or exposed tissues and are often used internally to check emancipation of blood serum or mucous secretions.
An astringent is almost like an antiseptic, in which it really has cleansing properties that lift bacteria out of the skin and even kill some of those nasty germs on the skin's surface. Some metal salts and acids have also been used as astringents. The perfect way for the treatment of oily skin is the use of astringents as they have a tightening and drying effect on the skin. Buttermilk or beaten egg whites also have a drying and tightening effect. Parsley juice mixed with honey and a few drops of lemon or ginger is good for an oily skin. This mixture regulates the secretion of oil.
Tips you can try at home
- Wash your face with the mixture of vinegar and water in an equal parts.
- The paste of ½ teaspoon lime juice, small peach and ½ teaspoon tomato juice can be used as an effective astringent.
- Make a juice of two large lemons, one tablespoon tincture and sixteen tablespoons of distilled water. Dip a cotton wool in this juice and gently on your face.
- Rub your face with the juice of two tomatoes, wait for half an hour. Wash it off when it soaks.
- Cucumber and lime juice are excellent astringents.
